Psychology at it's best.
You need to get the balance absolutely spot on.
Wading in too strongly would provoke the fight response from the lions. Too hesitant and the lions would see through you.

Lions can sense fear,
If you act without fear, they would back off for a time,
untill they get over the mental shock of upright walking creatures walking towards them, and
realize that these walking things are very smaller than themselves and
then they would attack.

It's not really respect, just plain fear. Lions can't tell the difference between a long stick/bows and a rifle - replay that scene a couple of hundred years ago, and I bet you there would have been three skinny chaps on the menu that night aswell.
It's sad isn't it...Feckin poachers!

However, the point of this program is to demonstrate how man uses his "know how" to and succeed in controlling or taming the habitat he dwells in. In this case going against his instinct!

@koko4u2luv So what? Ur just being pedantic, which weapons they have makes no diffence. Fact is they have weapons, and the lions probably know from past experience that man is a superior predator, which is why they run. Trying to compare this to people beefin eachother is just silly, theres no analogy.

@Shiftee88 I think your incorrect, animals smell fear it is certain they can sense it. If you have ever lived or worked with beasts big or small you should know this. In Humans I think its more to do with eye contact and body language. One "predatory" human will obviously prey on the weak (female, young, elderly, not so strong), however being bold and brave without showing your fear can counter this behaviour if used correctly.

@Shiftee88 Just how do you think we evolved, just how do you think our millennia old ancestors survived?

Lion recognise patterns they have developed as they were growing up. They have never dealt with humans before and so to see them approaching in such an aggressive and straightforward manner, it would be instinctual for them to back off. Once something has become familiar, things become dangerous, thats why the hunters had to be very quick in there task on the kill. If a bold lion attacks and fends off these intruders, cubs will learn to do the same in the future.
